Law 29: the legal warranty on heat pumps
Since October 5, 2026, Québec law requires a good-working-order warranty on heat pumps and air conditioners. Here are the essentials, in plain terms.

What is this about?
“Law 29” (the Act to protect consumers from planned obsolescence and promote the durability, repairability and maintenance of goods) created the legal warranty of good working order. A regulation lists the goods covered and the warranty duration. For heat pumps and air conditioners, the duration is 6 years from delivery.
What the warranty covers
- A covered unit that is not in good working order during the warranty period must be repaired free of charge by the merchant or the manufacturer.
- Parts and labour are included.
- It adds to the other legal warranties in the Consumer Protection Act (for example normal use for a reasonable period) and to manufacturer warranties.
What is excluded
- Normal maintenance, and parts replaced because of that maintenance.
- Damage caused by abusive use.
Who is covered, and from when?
The rule applies to contracts made from October 5, 2026. A unit bought before that date remains covered by the general legal warranties and the manufacturer’s warranty. The merchant must show the warranty duration near the price, and the manufacturer must state it clearly online.
Paid extended warranties
Before selling you an extended warranty, the merchant must give you the “Notice on legal warranties” and tell you the legal warranty already exists at no cost.
